Technology and artificial intelligence are advancing at an unprecedented speed, challenging our traditional meaning of self and sense of being human. Our minds can be boiled down to datasets, our faces simulated. This game of algorithms is redefining what excellence looks like in a way we can't compete with.
It's leading us to look in the mirror and think, "If a machine can outsmart me, what does that say about who I am?" Many may ask what is the role of humans in the age of AI?
As machines become capable of more tasks once thought to be uniquely human, we are left to rethink our sense of self and place in the world. However, preferring not to pushback, we must thoughtfully integrate this technological progress while staying grounded in the qualities that make us historically and inherently human.
AI Exceeding Human Cognition
To all our wonders, AI can now write books, compose music, diagnose medical conditions, defeat grandmasters in complex games like chess and Go, and drive cars more safely than humans. This technological progress stands in contrast to the linear progression of human thinking. This forces a confrontation with profound existential questions that we struggle to comprehend within the frameworks available to us.
The sudden realization of AI's emergent cognitive faculties leaves us disoriented and questioning implicit assumptions about human nature. While these advances have many benefits, they are also restructuring deeply the social fabric and our concept of self.
Though AI exceeds human capabilities, we must openly admit the constrained nature of individual human cognition in relation to emerging technological complexity. We should adopt a learning posture to understand artificial intelligence in all its forms instead of perceiving it as a threat.
AI Shaping Human Identity
Our identities are not only influenced by our lived experiences but also by the technology that surrounds us. Technologies like AI are also actively shaping human identity. The identities we construct are formed in relation to the tools we use to understand ourselves and our relationship to the world. For example, computer-generated images of fake people fascinate us because they are able to signify “human” while lacking any authenticity.
Since these synthesized representations infiltrate more domains, we must revisit basic notions of what is “real” both in ourselves and in external reality. Our identities are more fluid and complex than we may assume, thus we need to redefine a permanent integral human identity in relation to the age of AI.
Reclaiming Humanity
We spend more time immersed in hyper-realistic digital worlds from which a reflexive pushback is need of the hour for our core humanness. When technology becomes too perfect, predictable and sterile, man needs to instinctively retreat. The human spirit resists becoming formulaic, seeking more humor, imagination, ambiguity, love and spontaneity. This pushback response is inherent to human nature, acting as a counterbalance to over-engineering.
This moment of retreat from tech can actually bring on a rediscovery of our human essence. For seeking human qualities blurred by algorithms, many may turn to the arts, philosophy and spirituality as safe harbor in the storm away from the technological gaze. We can redefine what gives our existences meaning and value through re-engaging with the messy reality of our inner lives influenced by the age of AI.
Our humanity and worth is found not in solving problems optimally or possessing encyclopedic knowledge, but in our ability to imagine, create, feel compassion and wrestle with existential questions. We must continually reclaim these activities as vital to reclaim humanity again in the age of artificial intelligence.
Balancing an Uneven
Our relationship with technology is complex; it both augments our abilities while subtly undermining our conception of identity and humanness. By maintaining self-awareness and staying grounded in those qualities and values that make us essentially human, we can strike a balance.
Technology should enrich our experience rather than obscure our identities. With intention, we can harness it in service of our values. As with the growth of AI, the task for humanity is to move wisely into the future without losing sense of self.
This begins with looking
courageously inward and knowing our core values and establishes meaningful
interaction where AI tools allow human to flourish rather than perish in
ambiguity.
